An intrepid team from MSA Focus will be participating in this year’s Race the Sun in support of the children’s charity Action Medical Research, dedicated to improving the health of babies and children.
The challenge is for a team of four to cycle, hike and canoe their way around a set course around the stunning Brecon Beacons, South Wales with the aim of finishing before the sun goes down.
The team will leave the historic town of Brecon at sunrise on the morning of Saturday 24th June 2017 and cycle around 23 miles heading south past the Storey Arms and around the beacons to the base of Pen-y-Fan, South Wales highest mountain, and the beginning of the classic horseshoe walk.
The team will swap their bikes for walking boots and hike the 8-mile horseshoe route, which summits Corn Du (873m), Pen-y-Fan itself (886m) and Cribyn (795m) with a total vertical height gain of over 2,400ft.
Having completed the hike, it’s back on the bikes for a short blast over to Pontsticill Reservoir, where two open Canadian canoes await them. The canoes will be bound together to form a raft so all four team members can together complete a full circuit of the reservoir, before jumping back on the bikes for the 23mPile ride back north to Brecon and a well-earned rest – hopefully before the sun has gone down!
It’ll be a fun and challenging day for the team, but the reasons for doing it couldn’t be more serious: It is all to raise both money and awareness for a very, very worthy charity, that is desperate for funds.
Action Medical Research help children and babies across the UK with severely debilitating and life limiting illnesses, but it is underfunded. For every project Action Medical Research can fund there’s another one it has to turn away – simply due to a lack of funds.
